Bank holiday tomorrow: State-run and private banks in Maharashtra will remain closed on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, on account of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire. The bank holiday is declared in Maharashtra under RBI’s Holiday Negotiable Instruments Act. Banks in other parts of the country will likely remain open and function as usual.

Banks closed on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti?
Banks are closed in select cities of Maharashtra to observe Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti. Banks in other states and cities will remain open and function as per regular banking hours. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks in Maharashtra will observe a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881. As per the RBI’s bank holiday calendar, banks will be closed in the following cities on February 19, 2025:
On this date, banks will function as usual in other locations across India unless the respective state governments declare otherwise. Due to the state holiday, account holders will need to reschedule their visits to the bank on February 19.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti holiday
While banks will remain closed on February 19, essential services such as hospitals, emergency response units, and public transportation will continue to function as usual in Maharashtra. Based on their policies, commercial establishments, private businesses, and shopping centres will likely remain open.
However, on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, government schools in Maharashtra will remain closed, while private schools may or may not observe a holiday. Private institutions, offices, and educational establishments may observe different schedules. Employees and students are advised to confirm their institution’s holiday status in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
Maharashtra observes a public holiday on Shiv Jayanti or the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj festival. On this day, the state honours the first Chhatrapati of the Marathas, Shivaji Maharaj (1630-1680) on his birth anniversary.
Digital banking on February 19
Even as the physical bank branches remain shut for services, the online banking services will remain functional. On Wednesday, online banking facilities and UPI-based payment gateways offered by the banks will continue to function as usual.
