NASA: No need to worry about Asteroid 2024 YR4’s path, impact risk expected to be ruled out
NASA has been closely monitoring asteroid 2024 YR4, a space rock estimated to measure between 130 and 300 feet (40 – 90 metres) across. While initial calculations indicate a very small chance of impact with Earth on 22 December 2032, astronomers believe that further observations will likely rule out any risk altogether.According to NASA’s Near-Earth Object (NEO) monitoring system, the asteroid’s trajectory is still being refined. As additional data is collected and incorporated into orbital calculations, scientists expect the probability of impact to drop to zero. However, the asteroid will move beyond the range of Earth-based telescopes by April 2025,…

Mr Altman’s prediction taps into an established school of thought. As large language models first gained popularity in the early 2020s, economists and bosses were hopeful that they, and other AI tools, would level the playing field, with lower-skilled workers benefiting most. Software capable of handling tasks such as protein-folding and poetry-writing would surely democratise opportunity. Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, a chip designer, envisioned a future in which workers “are all going to be CEOs of AI agents”. More recent findings have cast doubt on this vision, however. They instead suggest a future in which high-flyers fly still…

(Bloomberg) — Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s chief executive officer said the pursuit of artificial general intelligence is now the company’s “primary objective.” “Our first and foremost goal is to pursue AGI,” Eddie Wu told investors on a call after the company reported results that surpassed analyst estimates. “We aim to continue to develop models that extend the boundaries of intelligence.” The Chinese technology company built an empire out of e-commerce, and still counts that business — including services such as AliExpress and Taobao — as the core of its operations. (Bloomberg) — Two house cats died after contracting bird flu in the homes of dairy workers, a troubling sign that the virus may be moving between species and becoming more widespread. The cats’ owners lived in separate households in Michigan and developed symptoms of H5N1 last May, according to a report released Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
